Question:

Matter exists in 3 "normal" states (the 4th being plasma). What are the 3 states of matter, what are the 2 major factors that affect the phases, and how are the plotted graphically?

Ted E.
Answer:

The three states of matter are solid, liquid and gaseous forms in which both the pressure and temperature have a relationship on these phases. We can conceptualize the form matter will take by constructing a "Phase Diagram". On this chart, pressure exists on the Y axis and temperature on the X. These diagrams are unique to each form matter. The point at which temperature and pressure are at a level where all 3 phases exist simultaneously is called the "Triple Point."

Question:

Bees, ants, wasps and other insects from the order hymenoptera (the hive insects), have a class system based on female drones that have given up their ability to reproduce. What is the term for this and genetically/evolutionarily what is stopping a worker drone from leaving and starting her own colony?

Ted E.
Answer:

Altruism is the characteristic which causes worker bees, ants, etc... to give up their reproductive capabilities for the "greater good" and to protect their sisters. Through the genetic mechanism of haplodiploidy, if a hive as only one queen who is mated one time, all of the workers or "sisters" are 0.75 related vs typical siblings of 0.5. Additionally if one were to mate, their offspring would be only 0.5 related. This ratio of genetic viability creates the altruistic affect in which it is more genetically efficient to give up reproductively and protect one's sisters than to start a separate colony.
