Mainframe systems used to have multiple processes and were able to be loaded with a ton of memory and were able to to multi thread applications and work load. With newer cpu chips, and more common server equipment and cheaper equipment, data centers now can have multiple servers that will be able to multi thread and handle load mainframes could spread across the servers.
