Why is it important to cool down after exercise?
After exercise, there is venous pooling in the lower extremities. A cool down creates continuous muscular contractions that help with venous return back to the heart. Whereas the veins do not have a significantly high blood pressure and therefore lack the ability to assist in venous return alone, contractions squeeze the veins to push blood back up to the heart.
