Question:

A person had a rectangular-shaped garden with sides of length 16 feet and 9 feet. The garden was changed in to a square design with the same area as the original rectangular-shaped garden. How many feet in length are each of the sides of the new square shaped garden?

Caroline L.
Answer:

The rectangular garden has an area of 16 x 9 = 144 square feet. If a square garden has the same area, each side would have a length of the square root of 144, or 12 feet. As a check, 12x12=144 square feet.

Question:

You are in charge of catering for a school function. To limit the cost, you will serve only two entrees. One is a vegetarian dish that costs $6 and the other is a chicken dish that costs $8. If there are 150 people at the function and your budget for food is $1000, how many of each type of entrée will be served?

Caroline L.
Answer:

First, define variables: x will represent the number of veggie meal served and y will be the number of chicken meals served. Using the information given, two equations can be written: x+y=150 and 6x+8y=1000. Using substitution, solve the first equation for x (x=150-y) and substitute into the second equation: 6(150-y)+8y=1000. Solving this equation, y=50. Substitute that value for y into x=150-y and x will be 100. Thus 100 veggie dishes were served and 50 chicken dishes were served.
