Question:

The way people stay informed about current events has changed over the past few decades. Answer:

While our parents' generation stayed informed by reading a newspaper everyday or receiving a monthly magazine subscription, nowadays the most efficient way to learn about current events is as simple as opening an app on our smart phones. The new forms of media outlets like Facebook and Twitter have made news instantly available and convenient for consumers. Social media allows for a two way conversation between readers and sources. For instance consumers can respond to news posts made by politicians, news outlets and even brands. Technology has also created a way for news to be customized specifically for each reader, depending on topic interests and viewpoints. However, these changes in the way consumers receive content comes with its own set of challenges. For example, the overwhelming amount of online sources available today brings into question the authenticity of information. Furthermore, personalized news stories remove an important aspect of traditional print outlets- listening to and considering contradicting viewpoints. Though staying informed is more efficient and convenient than ever for consumers, it presents challenges that affect society as a whole.
