Question:

Discuss the beginning of U.S. imperialism.

Lauren L.
Answer:

In the late 1800s the U.S. government and politicians identified a need to compete in the world market and joined the long-held European practice of colonizing. Colonizing consists of forcefully taking over another country politically and culturally. The U.S. first annexed (fancy word for taking over) Hawaii and involved itself in the Spanish American War (to free Cuba of Spanish colonization). But in the U.S. pushed their economic interests in Cuba in return. Instead of helping the Philippines free themselves of France’s colonization the U.S. colonized the Philippine’s and a conflict ensued in which both sides committed horrible acts—the U.S. often slaughtered entire villages including women and children. The Filipinos were fierce warriors and often mercilessly slaughtered U.S. troops.
