Question:

Which sounds better: The mouse was eaten by the cat. The cat ate the mouse.

Rachel H.
Answer:

You would want to say "The cat ate the mouse." This is a better sentence because it uses an active verb, not a passive one. Go through your essay and try to change passive voice to active voice. This will really make your writing sound stronger!

Question:

Why do some productions of Merchant of Venice ignore the final act?

Rachel H.
Answer:

Merchant of Venice is perhaps the most controversial Shakespeare play due to its arguably anti-semitic content. However, some critics argue that the first four acts of the play suggest that the work up until act five is the Shylock's tragedy, rather than the Christians' Comedy. By removing the double marriage in and celebration of Act Five, the play ends with Shylock being stripped of his spiritual and social identity.

Question:

How did poet Frank O'Hara's job as at the MoMA influence his work?

Rachel H.
Answer:

O'Hara was primarily interested in a painting style called Abstract Expressionism. Abstract Expressionist paintings are characterized by a focus on color and gesture rather than subject or story. O'Hara's poetry, particularly his iconic collection Lunch Poems, mimic this surface-level focus. The poet focuses on his sensory experience rather than reflection, and thus also avoids forcing "meaning" onto his work. Some poems that really display this influence are "Poem (Lana Turner has collapsed!)" and "A Step Away From Them." Scholar Marjorie Perloff is has been perhaps the most important (and prolific) critic looking at O'Hara's relationship to painting.
