How did Classical period music change in the Romantic era, in terms of melody, harmony, rhythm and form?
Melody became more chromatic and ambiguous, with longer phrases and more ornamentation. Harmony went beyond the 'closely related keys', and ventured to keys 3 and 4 accidentals away. Brief shifts from major to minor became common, and composers sometimes started piece in keys other than the tonic. Rhythm became both more repetitive (Schumann and Schubert, for example) and more florid and varied, as in Chopin and bel canto mad scenes). Forms became much larger and more idiosyncratic, but there was also a flowering of small forms such as the waltz, mazurka and character piece.
How are Hemingway, Steinbeck and Faulkner different in their approach to 'realism'?
Hemingway limits himself to description, rather than discussing the thoughts and feelings of his characters. Steinbeck portrays a political and economic reality. The status of his characters in society is of paramount importance. Also, his art is meant to influence and change the 'real world'. Faulkner attempts to paint the reality of the inner mind, the flow of one's thoughts. While the effect of this can be quite strange, in a way it is the most realistic of all.
