While both Mitosis and Mieosis involve the division of cells, Mitosis is used for cell division and replication whereas Meiosis is used to create gametes in organisms that use sexual reproduction. Additionally, while Mitosis and Meiosis have similar processes, Meiosis undergoes a second division of the cellular contents (including DNA), producing four daughter cells instead of two. Mutation in Mitosis is usually limited to copy errors. However, in Meiosis homologous chromosomes will often overlap and swap segments in Prophase and Metaphase 1. This leads to more variation in sexual reproduction. Independent assortment of chromosomes--or the random segregation of the mother and father's chromosomes, can also lead to novel combinations.
