What are some of the main standards that students must master in order to be proficient writers in 4th grade?
Writing in the elementary grades is critical because not only does it set the building blocks for strong writers later in life, but it also begins to get students interested in writing. The standards addressed in writing are vast, but I would say the most important standards pertain to informational writing. The Common Core State Standards state that students should be able to "Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.", This vague standard not only should be attainable by the end of 4th grade, but continues throughout a student's life - how they are able to explain phenomena they witness everyday.
What is the purpose of literature?
Literature has a variety of purposes that are expressed differently by different authors. Literature has created social change, brought forward controversies, and expressed emotions. The purpose is highly dependent on the time period, the audience, and the written piece itself. How one interprets the literature will affect how they interpret the former items as well.
What is standards-based learning?
Standards-based learning is what is happening in many of America's schools. Districts align themselves to various standards, whether it be state standards or the Common Core State Standards. Teachers are expected to base their lessons on the standards aligned to the grade level. However, the focus should be on how prioritized-standards, in order to ensure students reach mastery on specific skill sets. Standards-based learning is the basis of the current American education system.
