What are the most prevalent air pollutants? Give examples of both primary and secondary pollutants.
The most prevalent air pollutants are: sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon oxides (CO, CO2), and particulate matter. These are all primary pollutants as they come directly from vehicle exhaust, industrial emissions, or natural sources. Secondary pollutants are compounds formed from the reaction of these with sunlight, water, oxygen, or other compounds. Secondary pollutants include; ozone, sulfate, and nitrate.
What is an atomic radius and what trends do the atomic radii of elements follow when read both across and down the periodic table?
The atomic radius is the radius of the atom including the electron cloud. This radius increases down a group of the periodic table as the total number of electrons increases as well as the number of energy shells used. The radius decreases across a period, with each element the nuclear charge increases and electrons are more attracted to the nucleus.
