Who was the founder of Behaviorism and why is he is important?
B.F. Skinner. He created a theory called operant conditioning, which says that a behavior is always a result of its consequences, whether or not these consequences are punishers or reinforcers. These consequences will make it either more or less likely for the behavior to occur again. For example, the behavior of putting on sunscreen is influenced by the lack of sunburn that will occur. The behavior is putting on sunscreen, and the consequence is not getting sunburned (this is also negative reinforcement), which will make this behavior more likely to occur in the future.
Explain one theme that is explored in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.
One theme that is explored in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is family and isolation. Frankenstein’s creature grows up without caretakers, having to teach himself everything, and eventually comes to hate mankind. From birth he was abandoned, and Frankenstein called him a horrid and ugly creature. Through reading books, seeing his own reflection, and being rejected by human societies, the creature realizes that he is different than the rest of the people on earth. He develops into a character filled with loneliness and anger. Shelley uses this picture of abandonment and isolation to explore the importance of having a family identity and how the lack of a support system may influence a person's personality or thought patterns.
