What is the function of a topic sentence in a paragraph?
The primary function of a topic sentence is to let a reader know what subject is being discussed in the paragraph (main idea) and why it is being discussed. In the context of an essay, the topic sentence would identify how the point of the paragraph relates to the author's overall thesis. It also can help make a paragraph with multiple points more cohesive by connecting these points together explicitly for the reader.

How was the Romantic era in literature a response to the Industrial Revolution and the Age of Enlightenment?
The Romantic era developed out of deep dissatisfaction with the Industrial Revolution and Age of Enlightenment. The focus during this time had been on science, rationality, and industrial development. The Romantics saw this as an assault on nature and individualism. They longed for a simpler more pastoral time period where man was much more in tune with nature and not technology. The focus of its writing shifted away from the focused, controlled writing of the Enlightenment and turned its attention to evoking raw emotion and depicting the beauty of nature and man in his natural state.
