Spanish
TutorMe
Question:

When would I use "usted" instead of "tu?"

Andrea R.
Answer:

"Usted" is a formal version of "tu." English does not have a direct translation for it, which is a big reason why so many English speakers who learn Spanish have trouble determining when to use "usted" over "tu." The latter would be used when speaking with a sibling, friend, or someone whom you know well and are informal with. "Usted" is used when speaking to higher-ups, like teachers, parents (in some cultures), bosses, and elderly people, as well as strangers. As a general rule-of-thumb, if you do not know the person, you should always use "usted."

Writing

Question:

What should I do if I have Writer's Block?

Andrea R.
Answer:

Writer's Block is extremely common. If you are experiencing it, take some time away from your piece before revisiting it with an open mind. Keep your deadline in mind when deciding how long your break should be. When you are ready to revisit your piece and begin writing again, start by opening to a blank page and writing every thought that comes to mind. Afterwards, unscramble your thoughts and form them into a coherent, logical progression.
