Question:

Why do we sometimes use commas instead of periods in a sentence?

Hayley K.
Answer:

Commas are used to create a pause, rather than a stop. They help to break up thoughts but not end them. They shouldn't be overused, though. You don't want to create run on sentences.

Question:

How do you add 134 to 167?

Hayley K.
Answer:

When you are adding large numbers together, it is important to set the problem up vertically so you can add down. It doesn't matter which number is on top. Start with the digit closest to the right. Add the 4 and the 7 together. This makes 12. Since you can't put two digits under the equation, just put the second digit of the "12" we just found (2). Carry the 1 to the top of the equation so that you can add it to the next column to be added. Next add the 3 and the 6, but also include the 1 that we just carried in the previous step. 3+6+1=10. Again, put the second digit under the equations bar (0) and carry the one to the next column. For this last step, you need to add the 1+1+1=3. The answer is now 302.

Question:

How do you solve the equation: 2x+24=x/2

Hayley K.
Answer:

Great question! First you need to multiply each side of the question by 2. You have to do this to get the "x" on the right side of the equation by itself. After you do this, you should have 2(2x+24)=x. Now you need to distribute the 2 to the terms inside the parentheses. After you do this, you should have 4x+48=x. Now you should move the 4x to the right side so that like terms are together. You should get 48=x-4x. Once you simplify the right side by combining the "Xs" together, you should have 48= -3x. Divide each side by three to get the "x" by itself. You should have -16=x!
