Question:

Rewrite the following sentence to make it more concise and easier to read. The point I wish to make is that the employees working at this company are in need of a much better manager of their money.

Lauren T.
Answer:

The company's employees need a better financial manager. It is important when writing sentences to avoid be verbs as much as possible. Try and eliminate as many as possible. Get rid of any unnecessary words, such as, "the point I wish to make." Avoid awkward phrasing like "better manager of their money." The subject should be doing the action, so "the company's employees need," rather than having an arbitrary introduction to your sentence. Also, avoid filler words and prepositions where you can, so avoid words like this, that, these, and those.

Question:

What is the importance of Penelope in the Odyssey?

Lauren T.
Answer:

Penelope is important in the Odyssey because she represents a strong, faithful, and hospitable woman. She has many suitors, but she knows Odysseus will return; she does show her hospitality, but the suitors abuse it. She lacks the ability to remove the suitors. Penelope is a strong woman who is also very cunning. She devises a plan where she is using a loom and the undoing her work at night because she said she would choose her suitor when she finished her work, which took three years because of her cunning. This incidence showed not only how cunning she is, but also how oblivious the men were. It is important because it shows how they were blinding by their greed and desire. She also showed how faithful she was to Odysseus. She did not pick one of the suitors because she knows Odysseus will return home. She is once again cunning when she realizes Odysseus is disguised as the beggar. She holds a contest for the suitors and says whoever can shoot with Odysseus' bow will win, and the beggar (Odysseus) wins. She is important because she is a strong and powerful woman who shows that these greedy men will not get what they want just so they can have her husband's possessions. She also portrays a faithful wife. She is so important to the Odyssey because she shows that while these men simply see her as a prize or gateway to a kingdom, she has her own voice and opinions, and she will not allow anyone to take advantage of her or Odysseus while he is away. **Opions may vary for this quesion because it is heavily opinionated; just be sure to support your opinion.

Question:

Which is the correct form of the following sentence? He left the scene of the accident and tried to forget that it had happened. He left the scene of the accident, and tried to forget that it had happened.

Lauren T.
Answer:

The first sentence is correct because no comma is needed. The reason there does not to be a comma is because there is an independent clause followed by a dependent clause, meaning the second part of the sentence after the word "and" could not stand alone because it would not be a complete sentence, which is why it needs to be joined with the first part of the sentence.
