Explain the error in the following sentence: I like swimming, running, and to bike.
This sentence lacks parallelism. In all types of writing, parallel structure is extremely important. Words and phrases must be consistent in their form. In this example, "swimming" and "running" are gerunds while "to bike" is an infinitive. To satisfy parallelism, it should read "I like swimming, running, and biking" (all gerunds), or "I like to swim, to run, and to bike" (all infinitives).
A clothing store offers a 40% discount on all regular T-shirts. Tyler paid $6 for his T-shirt. What was the original cost of the shirt?
It is important to understand that a discount involves subtracting the percentage of the original price from the original price. Tyler does NOT pay 40% of the original price. The problem can be solved algebraically. We can set up the following equation x-0.40x=6 where x refers to the original price and solve for x. As it can be seen from the equation. x-0.40x equals 0.60x. Therefore, it can also be directly interpreted from the question that Tyler paid 60% of the original price because 40% was taken off of it. We divide 6 by 0.6 and we get 10. The original price was $10.
Atoms are composed of what three particles, and where do the particles reside?
Atoms are composed of protons, neutrons, and electrons. Both protons and neutrons reside in the nucleus while electrons reside in orbitals surrounding the the nucleus. A good strategy is to remember that protons are positively charged, neutrons are neutral (no charge), and that electrons are negatively charged. The nucleus is always positively charged; therefore they must contain protons. Electrons are around them to counter the positively charged nucleus with their negative charges. Neutrons are neutral but are in the nucleus with protons.
