Question:

Use words to describe how the equation 245 X 36 can be solved using the area model.

Anna A.
Answer:

The problem 245 X 36 can be solved by drawing a box with six sections (three across the top, and down down the side). The numbers are then broken down into their place values. This means that 245 is equal to 200+40+5 and 36 is equal to 30+6. You place the 200+40+5 across the top of the box, the one with three sides, and the 30+6 going down the side of the box. Each number has its own section of the box. The two numbers that both line up with the section of the box are then multiplied together. 200 X 30 = 6000, 200 X 6 = 1200, 40 X 30 = 1200, 40 X 6 = 240, 5 X 30 = 150, and 5 X 6 = 30. These six products are then added together in order to find the final product to 245 X 36. 6000 + 1200 + 1200+ 240 + 150 + 30 = 8820. The answer that we are looking for is 8,820.

Question:

What was the Carlisle School, and how did it affect Native American life in the United States?

Anna A.
Answer:

The Carlisle School was a school that was open from 1879-1918. The school was established in Carlisle, Pennsylvania and was a school for Native American children. The Native American children were taken from their villages and taken to the school, where they were then stripped of their cultural clothing, language, and identity. The children were forcefully assimilated into the white culture. This affected Native American life in the United States because it took the children from their homes and stopped them from learning about their culture from their parents and tribe members. It changed how the younger generations of Native Americans saw their parents' culture and the career paths that the children decided to follow.

Question:

How did the treatment of the Jewish people prior to World War II create a mindset in which the holocaust was an openly accepted idea by Nazi officials and SS soldiers?

Anna A.
Answer:

Starting in the time of the Roman Empire the Jewish people moved out of their homeland in middle east and spread north through Europe and establishing the reputation as merchants. Jewish people were welcomed in communities up until the rise of Christianity in Europe at the beginning of the Medieval age. At this time the ruling Lords of the land started to ban the Jewish people from their land due to their differences in faith, and the Jewish people began being known as a nomadic people, because they had no real place to call home. The Lords of the land also claimed that since the Jewish people were such profitable merchants, that they were greedy people who cheated people out of their money. These prejudices followed the Jewish people thought the centuries, and gave the people of Europe someone to blame for their struggles. The Jews were forced from the their homes and beaten, attacked, and killed long before Hitler and the Nazi party came to power. It was only at this time that scientist believed that they had scientific proof that Jewish people were lesser beings than those of Aryan blood, and that they were more prone to becoming criminals that the Nazis put the plan into place to systematically get rid of all of the Jews, except those that they forced into labor.
