Question:

Why is voice important?

Gabriel D.
Answer:

When writing, words on the page are never just that. Having a strong voice--that is, a presence beyond just the words--allows you to connect with the reader and adds levels of depth to your writing. It shows that there is a mind at work behind the story, and helps explain how to understand the piece. A voice also helps disengage the reader from the notion that they are reading, and instead are simply part of a conversation with the words on the page.

Question:

What is composition?

Gabriel D.
Answer:

Composition is the basic underlying architecture of graphic design. It incorporates alignment, balance, white space, contrast, and more. Graphic design is a visual medium that tells a story: composition is the language you use to tell it.

Question:

How can we use art to understand the past, and interpret the present?

Gabriel D.
Answer:

Art is integral to understanding our culture. Take the Lascaux caves, for example, which contain some of the earliest and best preserved cave paintings in the world. They show us how a culture painted as a way of establishing control, as if the artists were creating the images to understand the animals the images depict. Art today is no different and strives to interpret forces that shape our world such as globalization, pop culture, and more. In making art, we gain some level of control over that which we don't understand.
