What makes a good essay? Surely the amount of information conveyed. Oh, and showing off my knowledge of difficult technical terms, right?
A good essay is, first and foremost, a clear essay! Any deep and technical knowledge will not be successfully delivered to the reader if the essay is not clear and well-structured. This is the cornerstone of good writing, and a set of skills that anyone can learn to master with the right help! How does one get from a good essay to an excellent essay? It is simply a matter of adding other ingredients, such as showing competence and expertise, learning to select relevant information, picking the right register and language to convey it, and practicing critical thinking to come up with original and interesting ideas.
Is time spent studying the main factor for good grades?
No! Study smart, not hard! In my time at Oxford University I have perfected my knowledge of studying skills that can literally save you years. I can help you learning simple habits to study effectively and to make the most of your time and concentration. Recent scientific evidence shows that small changes to note organization, study session scheduling, and study/breaks routine are enough to dramatically improve productivity.
Is Philosophy a dead discipline, or is it still useful in the contemporary world?
There are different approaches to Philosophy. One is to study the history and evolution of ideas throughout the centuries, understanding them in the historical context in which they were developed, and in relation to the philosophical debate of that time. Another one is to study philosophical problems in themselves, considering ancient and contemporary ways to approach them, and apply them to pressing issues of our time. In both senses, Philosophy is very much alike as a discipline. In the second sense, in particular, Philosophy is now a protagonist in vibrant and exciting debates involving cutting-edge natural sciences such as Neuroscience, Quantum physics, Exobiology, but also humanities such as Politics, Ecology, and pretty much any field whose open questions have a big impact on our lives and on important matters.
