### Subject: Pre-Algebra

Solve the following two- step equation for the variable b. 3b + 15 = 45.

The problem is telling you "if you multiply 3 and a number b, then add 15, you will get 45." In order to solve the problem, you have to isolate the variable. To isolate the variable, you need to follow the opposite order of what the problem is telling you. So you will subtract 15 from both sides. 3b + 15 = 45 -15 -15 "The 15's will cancel on the left hand side" _____________ 3b = 30 <-This tells us that 3 times a number is 30. We need to divide both sides by 3. ____ ____ 3 3 b = 10 How do we know if we are right? Substitute 10 back into the original equation, and follow the correct order of operations. 3(10) + 15 = 45? 3(10) = 30 30 + 15 = 45 WOOHOO! We get what we need to get, which is 45. We got it correct!
