This is because more shells are filled on elements with larger periodic numbers and each successive shell is larger. Moving across a period causes the atomic number to decrease with the increasing atomic number due to nuclear charge. The nuclear charge is the positive charge that an electron experiences from the nucleus. Therefore, the nuclear charge is reduced because of the shielding effect from electrons around the nucleus.
