The left ventricle is more muscular than the right ventricle because it has to pump blood with higher pressure to travel a longer distance than the right ventricle does. The right ventricle pumps blood to the lungs, whereas the left ventricle pumps blood to the rest of the body. When the left ventricle contracts, the oxygenated blood is pumped into the aorta which carries the blood to the body. The deoxygenated blood from the body is carried back into the heart by the main vein. The deoxygenated blood filters into the right atrium and is then squeezed into the right ventricle when the right atrium contracts. The blood moves into the pulmonary artery when the right ventricle contracts. This deoxygenated blood is carried to the lungs by the pulmonary artery, and the oxygenated blood from the lungs is carried back to the heart by the pulmonary vein. The oxygenated blood filters into the left atrium and moves into the left ventricle when the atrium contracts, and the cycle continues.
