How do I structure a persuasive essay?
The main focus of a persuasive essay is to "persuade" a reader that your opinion is valid. You are essentially making a case to defend your point. To do so effectively, your persuasive essay must be structured around your argument. Begin the introductory paragraph with an exciting opener that grabs the attention of your reader. Ask yourself "what would make me want to read this essay?" Then, state your argument or "thesis" clearly and briefly state at least three pieces of evidence that support it. In the subsequent paragraphs, state how each piece of evidence supports your argument. It is also important to state possible counter-arguments either to the interpretation of your evidence or against your overall argument. Do not be afraid to tackle these and create your own counter-arguments as it will only strengthen the validity of your view. You are making a case so it is important to use direct pieces of evidence as much as possible. After you have sufficiently established your point, write a concluding paragraph which summarizes and reiterates why your argument is valid. Be careful not to introduce any new ideas in the conclusions that have not been discussed in the main body of the essay. End with a takeaway that elevates your argument beyond the scope of the topic you are writing about by connecting it to universal themes and real-life implications.

How do I keep myself from procrastinating?
Procrastinating is something that everyone succumbs to at some point. Overcoming that procrastination hump can be difficult, however, there are ways to overcome it. Research has shown that procrastination often results from our inability to regulate negative emotions associated with a particular task. For example, you might be avoiding starting on math homework because you are too afraid you will not know the concepts. First of all, it is essential to be able to forgive yourself even you have procrastinated already and to try to remove the negative emotions associated with the task. This can be done by breaking a bigger problem into smaller manageable pieces. Set smaller goals for yourself rather than trying to tackle the entire homework all at once and becoming overwhelmed. Limit your goal to doing just one problem for now. Although doing the problem may be difficult, it will be easier to tackle one problem a day rather than ten in one day. Then, once you get going, keep setting smaller goals until you have accomplished the larger goal. Set incentives to get started early and reward yourself when a task is completed. Remember, procrastination isn't always easy to overcome but with conscious effort, you can to overcome it.

How do I go about writing my personal statement for CommonApp?
To write an effective personal statement for a college application, it is essential to focus on topics and experiences that not only define you as a person but also celebrates what is most unique about you. In a sea of thousands of applicants, your personal statement should be one which makes you stand out to the admission committee. This does not necessarily mean that you must have accomplished extraordinary feats to be able to write a gripping personal statement. Even ordinary life experiences can result in amazing personal statements if you can extrapolate something greater from it. To get started, think about experiences that have greatly shaped who you are as a person or concepts or ideas that inform your identity. Next, think about why this experience has shaped you and your future ambitions at the University of your interest. Think about why you are interested in this particular University and what about you makes you a worthy candidate. Be sure to celebrate accomplishments but do not be afraid to highlight failures and lessons you have learned. Above all, focus on bringing out your true personality in your statement and avoid making yourself seem like someone you "think" the admission committee will want.
