Question:

An instrument store gives a 10% discount to all students off the original cost of an instrument. During a back to school sale an additional 15% is taken off the discounted price. Julie, a student at the local high school, purchases a flute for \$306. How much did it originally cost?

The equation, x-0.10x-0.15(x-0.10x)=306, may be used to solve the problem. Solving for x gives 0.90x - 0.15x + 0.015x = 306, where x = 400. Thus, the original price was \$400.

Question:

If you have a classroom full of students from many different cultural and financial backgrounds, how would you differentiate your instruction to meet the needs of each student?

Financial and cultural backgrounds play a major role in the instruction in the classroom. I would try to meet the basic needs of students before the school day begins. Students whom have not eaten breakfast may eat a quick snack, students whom did not have enough or any sleep the night before coming to school may rest in the nurse's office, students whom bring their iPad to school will lock it in my desk and be prompted to leave it at home in the future. My students would be taught from the first day of school how to treat others and what the word respect means. Many cultural differences may cause confusion in the classroom. Some students may see it as acceptable to curse in the classroom and push/hit others. Others may have been taught otherwise. It is crucial to establish your own community and culture within the classroom that can bring all of the students together, regardless of their various cultural backgrounds. Lastly, my students would be grouped by both ability and cultural differences. I would use my best judgement to decide where each student would best fit. Whether it be with students of similar cultural backgrounds, or completely different backgrounds.
