Why should students learn another langauge?
Learning another languages opens up other cultures. As Americans, this is crucial. We often get stuck inside our continental (or even national) bubble without paying much attention to the global scope of history or current events. Learning another language is a stepping stone to being a well-rounded, globally-conscious human. Aside from all that, it's actually a great deal of fun. You get to connect with people you wouldn't have been able to speak to otherwise. Also, in learning another language, you get to see your own native tongue in a new way.
Why is it important to be a good writer?
Being a good writer is a building block to being a good communicator. This comes in many forms, as well: technical writing, speaking, creative writing, law, understanding something that is written, and basic human communication skills. It is important to know the correct usage of words, phrases and grammar in order to connect to a wide variety of people, understand them, and be understood.
What is the significance of literature?
Literature's place in history works as a sort of mile-marker that coincides with the social and political state of the region in which it was taken. Studying literature apart from history is nearly impossible. However, literature also serves a greater purpose in bringing us inside each other's minds in a unique way that we don't get as often in the digital age. It creates a structure of empathy and understanding of others, while working to move our brain in creative, lateral motions around language.
