Please give a short example of how terracing has impacted agriculture, its environmental benefits, and what cultures are known to have used it.
Terracing, or turning a hillside into a series of steps for garden beds, has been a part of agriculture for a long part of human history. Early on, it was a technique used in the central Andes of South America, predominantly by the Incan civilization. Terracing helped these people to improve their crop yield, especially in such a mountainous region that might have otherwise been difficult to farm on. In addition, terracing has many environmental benefits including reduced erosion and run-off and is well suited for crops that require frequent irrigation.
Please choose the most recent novel or book that you have read and create a short response analyzing how the author employs syntax and word choice to articulate a point.
Recently I have read the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson. Originally in Swedish, the anglicized version would have been translated with great care. Words can translate differently than one may assume, so the publisher must have chose each English word with care to ensure the same meaning. The dialogue of Lisbeth Salander, one of the main characters, is probably the most interesting to analyze for this question. Scenes in which she is a part of contain very little dialogue on her part. When she does speak, she gives short statements, very rarely using any words with emotional connotation. This further builds the character that Larsson is trying to create. The lack of dialogue shows her disinterest in those around her, and the short responses that she does give provide more proof of her inability to communicate effectively and create relationships. Thus, those characters with whom she converses with in a less strained matter show their importance in her life.
