Question:

Some scholars argue that a public administrative office does not need to have a belief system of absolute truth in order to achieve its mission statement. Would you agree or disagree?

Answer:

I would agree with Campbell and Nash in their take from 'A Sense of Mission: Defining Direction for the Large Corporation.' They say "sense of mission" has little to do with a written statement, but consists of a coherent set of authentically felt norms that possess genuine meaning for all employees" (Goodsell 2011, 9). In this way, the model consists of a purpose, strategy, policies, and values. I like this strategy because as Goodsell points out the pursue is to show how rational strategy integrates with economics, and then non-economic values and beliefs intersect with corporate standards and moral principles (Goodsell 2011, 9). I think in this way, the scholars are saying that a written statement is not necessary for the mission to be achieved, as they will intersect based on those cultural and normative values.

Question:

Your instructor assigned a topic for a paper that you don't know much about. How would you start your search?

Answer:

A good place to start your research is using reference materials, particularly if it is a subject you haven't mastered yet. When you think of reference materials think of encyclopedia entries or sources like Wikipedia. Wikipedia can actually be a great way to start your research. It allows you to get some background on the topic and has links to more reputable sources for further explanation. You just don't want to cite Wikipedia, because anyone can log in at any time and change the entry! Most libraries subscribe to reference materials so conducting a general topic search in your library's main search is likely to yield great results!

Question:

Identify an example of a realist leader in the international system, and describe whether or not they would be likely to cooperate within that system.

Answer:

Vladimir Putin is a good example of a realist, as well as Kim Jung Un. You will find the greatest examples of realists in more restrictive regimes. Realists will cooperate in the international system, but only to get what they want. The exchange of cooperation must be in their favour (self-interest). Russia, for example, will participate in the United Nations, not to find ways to cooperate with all of these other countries, but in order to be a member of the Security Council, which holds significant power within the organization.
