Subject: Music Theory
What is music theory and why is it important to study?
Music theory is the nuts and bolts of how music works and is put together. This isn't just for academic postulating; knowing more about the music we perform helps us make better decisions on how to perform it. Learning and mastering the "rules" of music helps inform whether and when to break those rules. Furthermore, learning music theory helps you learn how to read music better and therefore helps you learn a piece more quickly.
Why are humans drawn to music?
No one really knows! There are theories about how it pertains to our natural rhythms and enjoyment of nature, but there is nothing scientifically definitive about why humans are drawn to music. Music is one of the few human experiences that has popped up in cultures all around the world separately throughout human history. At best, we can call it a primal instinct.
Subject: Film and Theater
What are the origins of performance storytelling and what was the purpose in that culture?
Theatre, and eventually film, have their roots in ancient Greek society. Plays were written for competitions during the celebration of the god Dionysus. These plays would usually feature some god or political figure and was an opportunity for people to hold up the mirror to their societal beliefs so that people could question them and use them to further discourse in the democracy.
