Why English? Why do character and stories about people matter?
Thinking about the characters actions in "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson, explain how their choice of tradition outweighs the choice right vs. wrong. When the characters in The Lottery make the decision to attend the town square meeting, their presence at the yearly ritual explains the value that is placed on the event. Everyone attends this meeting, everyone is part of the lottery- young and old alike, even the disabled. The attendance of the lottery, as well as the participation is mandatory. We see Tessie come running when she nearly forgets the day. It is not until Tessie begins to scream and turn upon her own family and friends that we as the audience recognize the tradition is the community's lottery selection - to sacrifice one of their own, by stoning. How easily we can all get wrapped up in our own worlds and not even realize.
