Answer:

we can split these numbers up to make them easier to add. we can use lines to represent 100 circles to represent 10 and dots to represent 1. so by drawing these out for both numbers overall we have two lines which totals to 200, three circles which totals to 30 and one dot, so overall total will be 231.

Question:

Angelica spent $42 on shoes. This was $14 less than twice what she spent for a shirt. How much was the shirt?

Answer:

In this problem, we are trying to solve for x, which would be the shirt. We have to separate what we know versus what we don't know. We know that Angelica spent $42 on shoes. We do not know how much she spent on her shirt. We also have to look for key words such as more, less, total, twice, etc. These are signs of addition, subtraction, multiplication, etc. Since we see that she spent $14 less, we can subtract 14. We also see twice, and know that this means double. Our total for the shoes is $42, we equal that to x times 2 which is 2x, then subtract 14 from that. Now we have our equation. 42=2x-14. To solve for x we can add 14 to both sides, what we do to one side we must to do the other. Now we have x by itself, divide both sides by 2 and x=28.
