What is the difference between Shakespeare's Comedies and his Tragedies?
Shakespeare's Comedies involve romance, and often have cases of mistaken identity, or some element of the fantastic such as magical transformations, or mischievous spirits. These plays very often have an "all's well that ends well" mentality, with the story being resolved and many characters ending with something they were looking for, whether it be love or a new purpose in life. Shakespeare's Tragedies typically deal with the downfall of a noble character, usually a man. There are several major character deaths along the way, and the main character themselves usually dies at the end after having undergone some transformative lesson. While these types of plays can contain humor, the humor is often dark. Magic can be an element, but often as something to be feared, or something not understood by the character or the audience
