With online shopping becoming the newest trend, America's Malls are predominantly going out of business. Continue the story that takes place in a failing mall below: At the mall, I walk by a mannequin that looks just like me. Something odd is happening…
My steps falter as I come to a stop outside of what used to be a smoothie place now functioning as a storage container. The mall feels empty. There aren't any real customers. Mostly older people take advantage of the air conditioning to go for their morning walks without melting. Behind me, the abandoned Sears' window displays three mannequins. At least, it did the first time I walked by. I take a quick breath before turning back around to face the old-carpet scent that oozes from the south-wing of the mall. "AHH!" My reaction is faster than my senses. My grandma's hand on my upper arm would have been more welcoming without the jump scare. "Come on now. I told you I wouldn't be in the bathroom long. Why did you go wandering off? I am too old for all this walking." She starts to walk away, her fingers falling from my unresponsive arm. "Gram, when you walked up... there were mannequins in the window, right?"
Read the following excerpt form, "For Example: A Flower" by Arkaye Kierulf. And death will shield us, in time, from the sun’s megalithic promise: Tomorrow, the same day. Tomorrow, the same day. For example: A flower is the most beautiful lie. Which literary device is being used in the final couplet of the poem? How does the use of this literary device affect the connotation?
Arkaye Kierulf uses a metaphor in the final couplet of the poem, "For Example: A Flower" to describe a flower as a beautiful lie. This metaphor evokes an image of death as the reader is forced to consider how a flower could become a lie. The life and beauty of the flower is a lie because it will soon wilt and fade. A connotation of deceit and betrayal lingers as the reader uncovers that the beauty of the flower will not last forever.
