Question:

Describe how a mass spectrometer works

Answer:

Mass spec enables te determination of structural features of a molecule by fragmentation but also, specialised mass specs such as MALDI, allow the determination of peptides and prevent fragmentation, albeit enable their identification/quantification via sequence and soft ionisation. A mass spec essentially works via the vaporisation of your sample, bombardment of high energy electrons to ionise it, followed by the acceleration via an electric field. This can also produce fragments which as subsequentially deflected via mas with a magnetic field and detected at a sector according to their mass/z

Question:

Describe the role of the human nervous system in returning a slightly raised body temperature to its normal level.

Answer:

Body temperature, through homeostasis must be constantly regulated for mainly reasons but most importantly, the maintenance of optimum enzymatic temperatures. thermoreceptors in the hypothalamus detect the increase in body temperature which trigger an autonomic nervous system response involving impulses from the CNS being sent, along motor neurones to the appropriate effectors to bring about a lowering of the core body temperature. Impulses travel along the axon and are insulated via the myelin sheath . Methods of heat loss include: vasodilation of arteriolar, activating hair erector effectors to relax and thus trap less air in insulation and even trigger sweating.
