How did Christianity grow from a fringe religious group to the world religion that it is now?
Christianity began at a time when the world was more connected than ever by the Roman Empire. As people moved along the roads between Roman territories, this new belief system grew in places where Jesus never taught. As they grew, they emerged from the fringes and Christians became more welcome in society, until the Roman emperor himself converted and decreed that Christianity would be the state religion.

What trends can be seen in the growing polarization of politics in the United States in the 20th century?
In the latter half of the 20th century, we can see that the Republican and Democratic parties becoming more and more opposed to one another. This was evident in 1964, when the Republican Party nominated Barry Goldwater to run for president. He was very high on states' rights and this made it difficult for him to get many swing votes in the wake of the Civil Rights Movement. The Democratic Party fell victim to this polarization in 1972 when it nominated George McGovern, who was adamant on legalizing drugs, which was not in favor among many in the populace.
