Question:

What makes it easy to talk to someone, and how do you find those connections in everyday life?

Answer:

Coming from a Venezuelan family, I understand the culture shock that can occur in many aspects of daily life. A cashier who seems awfully rude may just be having a tough day, or may miss his family in a different country. We can all relate on some level. One of the most fascinating things is finding those connections, and empathizing with the people you interact with. Perhaps you overheard that same cashier talking about his new shoes- compliment them. Maybe he showed interest in the book you're holding- let him read the cover. Interact with the world around you and friendships are bound to fall into place, making cultural transitions much more enjoyable.
