Why is inventory considered as a "burden" ? (Marketing in the Supply Chain)
Inventory is a burden because : - It is a responsibility to carry inventory. You need to rent/own a warehouse that is secure enough. It needs to be watched 24/7 to avoid to be stolen. You need to get an insurance in case of fire, natural disaster, theft etc. The warehouse needs to be big enough to carry all the inventory. -The risk of carrying inventory is also high. It is never sure that the products will be sold unless it is a A level product (which are the products that sell themselves very quickly) Moreover the products risk to perish (Obsolescence), get destroyed or become old fashion and unwanted by the customer. - Inventory is costly and risky and depending on how big the channel member is, they might or might not be able to afford to carry inventory. The wholesalers are usually the ones who absorb all the risk of the inventory burden because they’re the ones who carry the inventory and make the product available for the smaller retailer. In this way, economy of scale is obtained and the end user can benefit from it.
