Question:

What was the basis for the French Revolution and who were the instigators of said revolution?

Answer:

Though there were many causes of the French Revolution it created a massive social and political upheaval that continued well into the 19th century. In 1789 many in the lower class were dissatisfied with the debt and increased spending by the upper classes. The upper or "privileged" classes including the Catholic Church were seen as detrimental to French society that included farmers from the countryside. Inspired by the American Revolution and the Age of Enlightenment many intellectuals and common people banded together to overthrow the monarchial government and limit the reach of the Catholic Church. These same groups were the instigators of the revolution.
