Why did Arch-Duke Ferdinand's death spark the first World War?
The war started because of the European nations trying to maintain the balance of power in Europe. The nations allied with each other to protect themselves from the other nations. When Serbia declared war, their allies had to declare war with them. The Austrian allies also had to declare war to protect their allied nation as well. Thanks to colonization throughout the rest of the world, nations outside of Europe also became a part of the first world war.

How did the Romantic Period of intellectual history influence the argument for slavery in the south?
The romantic period brought the idea of paternalism to the forefront of American thought in the early 1800s. Paternalism was the idea that the male lead and protected the household, which included his wife, children, and any servants. Enslavers applied this concept to slavery. They said that the enslaved were fortunate to be in bondage because blacks were incompetent and unable to take care of themselves.

Was the Church of England really a 'reformed' church after Henry VIII created it? Explain your reasoning.
After Henry VIII created his 'new' church, he kept many of the traditions and doctrine of the Catholic Church, including the hierarchy. He only disagreed with the Pope on the issue of his divorce and responded to his refusal by creating the church. While many Protestants in England were glad that England became Protestant by definition, Henry was still very strict on those who dissented against the traditions of the church. He still disliked Lutheranism and other reforms.History often praises Henry for officially bringing the Protestant Reformation to England, but in reality he did little to reform the church.
