Question:

Why is gender representation important?

Sarah E.
Answer:

Gender is a socially constructed idea that is embedded in all aspects of our culture. Experiencing a variety of genders represented in media, literature, business, management and other powerful positions will soften the lines between binary gender roles and open up options and possibilities for every gender. Historically, the options for females were limited in representation so it is important now that the genders seen are as varied as the current population.

Question:

How do you critically analyze a text?

Inactive
Sarah E.
Answer:

Consider the author's main points - reread and underline those points within a text. Be sure to keep in mind the intended reader. Try to determine why the author chose to emphasize these points as important. Does there reasoning and explanations support their points? The questioning of "what" and then "why" can lead to many possible answers, but as long as you can explain your reasoning with support and evidence from within the text, you will do well with your analysis. This process can be used in anything from news articles to fiction to academic journals.
