Question:

Water has many characteristics to name a few there is, polarity, cohesion, surface tension, universal solvent, and a neutral pH, can you explain what each of these mean, and is water a biotic or abiotic factor in the environment.

Answer:

Water is polar meaning that the electrons are not evenly distributed leaving a slightly positive charge in the middle (where the hydrogen atom is) and 2 slightly negative poles (where the oxygen atoms are). Cohesion is waters ability to attract to itself, think about how water forms droplets, it wants to stay together and this is due to the its polar nature. Surface tension is waters ability to attract to itself which is what allows water gliders to "walk on water" so to speak, this also comes down to waters polarity and how the negative and positive poles attract to each other. Water is the universal solvent meaning that it can dissolve many different chemicals. Water has a neutral pH, which means it has a pH of 7. Finally water is an abiotic factor meaning that it is not living.
