Question:

What was the Chinese Exclusion Act and name three economic, social, or political motivations behind it?

Answer:

The Chinese Exclusion Act was a federal law passed in 1882 by President Chester A. Arthur, which barred the immigration of Chinese laborers to the United States for 10 years, and was significant in that it was the first significant law which restricted immigration to the United States. The Act was motivated by a large Chinese migration to the West Coast during the Gold Rush in the second half of the 19th century, which partnered with a post-Civil War economic decline and a scarcity of gold led to politicized anti-Chinese animosity as the immigrants began to dominate cheap-labor jobs.
