Question:

How do I begin my narrative essay?

Inactive
Amy M.
Answer:

Narrative essays are typically more descriptive and personal. These require unique introduction. A few strategies are to begin by jumping into the action (sort of like the middle of the story) and then backing up to give background that leads up to the event. Another strategy is to begin with dialogue if the two people talking are interesting enough. Yet another strategy that is typically foolproof is to start with some sensory description of the scene.

Question:

What is a comma splice, and how do I identify that in my writing?

Answer:

A comma splice means that you have placed a comma between two independent clauses. To find this common punctuation error, look for the subjects and verbs in the phrase before the comma and in the phrase after the comma. If you find two separate subject/verb combinations, then you know you committed a comma splice. An easy fix is to replace the comma with a period.

Answer:

John Dewey was an influential theorist whose child-centered curriculum is found in many preschools and kindergartens still today. He designed the idea of play 'centers' where children could manipulate objects, be creative, and learn collaboratively.
