Tutor profile: Katerina D.
What type of writing do you tutor/specialize in?
I love to write, and while pursuing degrees in the sciences throughout college and graduate school, I have always taken courses in creative writing as well. Through my experience applying to various programs, grants, and degrees, I have determined a template for persuasive essays (whether for English class, or an application!) And, through my degrees in public health, and career in academia, I have extensive experience in writing scientific papers for publication. Last, through my job in graduate school, I have a lot of experience editing and helping craft personal statements and project proposals for competitive programs, such as Fulbright. Writing can be fun, and not complicated after a person learns a couple templates and tricks that can be applied to all sorts of writing assignments!
Subject: Basic Math
What do you think makes you a great basic math tutor?
Being a good math tutor takes more than just knowing the subject matter! Not only do I have experience teaching middle school (5th, 6th, and 8th grade) math, but I also have a graduate degree in applied statistics! But what gives me joy, is helping show students that math can be fun, and useful. It's important to instill confidence in students in their skills, and show them how math is useful and applies to their world around them! I was a middle school student who was scared of math and hated math class, who later pursued a graduate degree in the subject! I believe any student has the potential to enjoy the topic and excel.
Subject: College Admissions
What experience/background makes you the ideal tutor to assist with college admissions?
I have extensive experience applying successfully to programs, starting with high school (Choate), through graduate school (Harvard and Columbia). Throughout my time in school, I have worked with students applying to competitive prep schools, colleges, and graduate schools. I have insight into the "game" that needs to be played to gain admission, and how to craft an application that as a whole will appeal to admissions committees. While I am done being a student, I have a lot of knowledge to pass on and help others!
