Why is writing more important than ever?
The obvious answer to this is texting. Many young people prefer to send text messages. Beyond that, however, there is always a need for thoughtful communication, which writing alone can provide. The spoken word is also important, but we have to have recorded speech. Learning to write clearly and effectively will always be important, regardless of what other field of study a student enters.
Why is studying literature still important?
Though the trend in recent years has been away from reading books, especially long works that would qualify as literature, it is still vitally important for people to read certain foundational texts. It is also important to read modern literature to continue to foster a broad vocabulary, as well as obtain a nuanced understanding of Western culture. T. S. Eliot wrote that in the West, all works of literature are footnotes to Shakespeare and Dante. This may be an overstatement, but it shows how certain works are primary and need to be read.
Why is the year 1066 so important to the development of English, and why do most English speakers know this historical date?
When the Normans invaded England in the year 1066, they imposed French onto the native language, which gives English, as a language, its unusual combination of two grammar structures, the underlying Germanic and the French-based structure.
