1. What punctuation mark should always proceed the word "but" when it is connection two independent clauses? 2. How should one go about learning to write in an artistic and argumentative way?
1. A comma should always proceed the word "but" when it is connecting two independent clauses. 2. Obviously there are many possible answers to this question, but I contend that we should surround ourselves with material worthy of emulation. Only by reading and hearing worthwhile content, written or orated by talented writers or speakers, can we truly gain the mastery we seek.
In his famous philosophical work, "The Republic", how and why does Plato deal with the problem of describing a truly just and noble being, when humans are so inscrutable?
He suggests that (and I paraphrase) sometimes it is easier to see the little in the large and the large in the small and takes human society (in this case a City) as a working analogy for the human being itself. The city (or society) is easier to see because it is all around us, whereas to look within, and identify purely human characteristics, is a much more involved and meditative task.
What is the unique value that children's imaginative play in nature brings to a scientific understanding of the world later on in life? In other words, what scientific skill-set does childhood play provide a foundation for in later academic pursuits?
Children's imaginative play is the essential basis for scientific understanding later in life, because it is the groundwork of their physical understanding of the world. One can study the theory of gravity all one likes, but if a person has never thrown a stone, they cannot truly understand what the practical implications are. For scientific fact to have meaning, the holder of the fact must also have a physical understanding of the world. After all, natural science describes the natural world and cannot exist meaningfully without it. Furthermore, physical experience, leads to an intuitive understand of the physical laws of the world. The importance of childhood nature play cannot be overemphasized!
