Subject: English as a Second Language
Tell me your personal experience on coming to America and learning English as a second language?
Coming from an Indian background and being born in a Middle Eastern country had challenges of its own, but learning English paved a challenging road ahead of me but it was very engaging. The first language I spoke when I learned to talk is a south Asian language called Malayalam. Although my parents never taught me on how to write in Malayalam, I was very efficient in communicating in my native tongue to other Malayalee speakers. Being born in the Middle East, I was fortunate that my parents sent me to a english-media school for a few months. As a result, I had a small basic understanding of the English language and spoke very little English. By kindergarten, my family decided to take a bold move and traveled to America in 2006. Interacting with students my age in America was a struggle and learning grammatical rules was completely new to me. The first three years (kindergarten-second grade), the school that I attended put kids like me (who were new to America) in ESL and that’s where I started to develop my English speaking/writing skills. The teachers in ESL were really effective in teaching and introducing the English literature language to me. The lessons that they taught had group activities that were engaging and the teachers portrayed lots of patience. Although it was difficult at first, I quickly picked up the pace of English, rules, sentence structure, and even how to speak English fluently. This sparked my interest in reading books, I visited the school library every chance I would get and picked a new book every week. Little did I know that English would be my strongest and best subject in the future. I had no idea that the future held numerous opportunities for me to help other students in English classes and essays with difficult writing topics. In the same way that the ESL teachers gave me a strong foundation in English, it would be a great honor to do the same on the TutorMe platform to other kids around the world.
