Question:

Why is the saying "to look at a far away is to look back in time" true when referring to a distant object in space, such as a star or galaxy?

Answer:

This is true because the light has traveled many light years to reach your eye, of camera. When you look at a star, even our Sun, you see the star as it was when it's light initially left the object. The star Betelegeuse is about 642.5 light years away, thus the light that we see is 650 years old. Meaning, that since Betelgeuse is a star at the end of it's lifespan, we wont know when it gone until 650 years after it has ended.
