Explain what elements are necessary for a solid thesis statement.
A solid thesis statement should include: 1) a subject, 2) action, and 3) how. For example, you may write the thesis statement: Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" illustrates the potential challenges of pushing the boundaries of scientific discovery through Victor Frankenstein's creation of a monster. In this thesis statement, the "subject" would be Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein." The "action" is that Shelley "illustrates the potential challenges of pushing the boundaries of scientific discovery," and the "how" is "through Victor Frankenstein's creation of a monster."
When following a standard five-paragraph essay format, what should the five paragraphs of your essay contain?
In a standard five-paragraph essay, your essay should include: 1) an introduction, 2) three body paragraphs, and 3) a conclusion. The introduction should introduce the topic being discussed and end with the writer's thesis statement. Thereafter, the three body paragraphs should contain examples that illustrate and support the writer's thesis statement. Finally, the conclusion should provide a solid wrap-up of the ideas introduced throughout the paper and leave the reader with something to reflect on.
What is ethnocentrism and how does it affect one's ability to communicate with others?
When a person embraces ethnocentrism, they hold the view that their culture is superior to cultures outside of their own. In this way, the person views other cultures as "less than." Having an ethnocentric attitude can inhibit one's ability to communicate with others, as this attitude often leads a person to use language that invalidates those who come from a different culture than their own. By sending invalidating, or disconfirming, messages like this, a person with an ethnocentric attitude will create communication barriers between themselves and those who are different from them.
