Question:

In archival studies, what is the records life-cycle and could you provide an example?

Logan T.
Answer:

The records life-cycle is a theory borrowed from records management. It refers to the stages of a record's "life" from creation to preservation, or even disposal. There are a few ways to conceptualize this process with several models. One of the most popular is the continuum model, proposed by Richard Berner. In this model, the singular goal of records management and archives is "responsible records use and administration leading to either authorized destruction or archival preservation and administration."

Question:

What purpose did the Articles of Confederation serve, and when were they ratified?

Inactive
Logan T.
Answer:

The Articles of Confederation served as the first US constitution from 1781 to 1789. This spanned the time from the Continental Congress during the Revolutionary War until the current US Constitution came into effect. The articles gave Congress the power to manage foreign affairs, war, the postal service, and borrow money (among others). Unfortunately, the articles lacked enforcement power and ceased being useful by 1786. The articles were written between 1776 and 1777 and adopted by Congress on November 15, 1777. They were not formally ratified by the states until March 1, 1781.

Question:

What was the Great Famine and what were its effects?

Answer:

The Great Famine, also called the Irish Potato Famine, occurred in Ireland from 1845 to 1849. It resulted from the repeated failure of potato crops in successive years. Late blight, a disease which destroys the roots of potato plants, was the cause. Due to the famine, about one million people died from starvation, typhus, and other diseases. Approximately two million Irish emigrated during this time, and during this same decade nearly 50% of all immigrants to the United States were Irish. The population of Ireland continued to decline all the way until its independence in 1921. By then, its population had dwindled to about half of the 1840 total.
